Currently on art: The end of 2022, looking towards the future

Hi everyone!

The year 2022 is ending as I begin to write this update that may or may not make it before the new year hits Finland. Another year of COVID is behind us and while things are looking better on that front, there’s also a lot else going on – most importantly the war in Ukraine – making this year a dumpster fire of its own.

For me, this year has been a duality of sorts – the first half of the year was marked by the massive software project course that taught me a lot and gave me fantastic experiences, something I reminisce with fondness. The later half, however, was a half-year of hardship: catching COVID early in July threw a massive monkey wrench not only in the quality of my FFM 2022 stories and studies, which I was planning on taking on big time during July, but, in its own way, the rest of the year as well. A struggle to tie at least some loose ends with my remaining courses in addition to grinding out FFM stories no matter what it took ended up exhausting me and dropping me into a slump. While my FFM 2022 was a success as far as getting passable stories written each day went, I was so burned out of flash fiction that I skipped Tribble Month 2022 with absolutely no remorse while the courses and my ongoing projects experienced major setbacks; Lyokostar 1 and Greenfield hit a wall where they went on an unofficial hiatus for most of the half-year while Exceptional Jedi and The Fate’s Way started suffering major decreases in productivity. As for the courses that I was supposed to finish in July, I was supposed to get them out of the way over the autumn semester to leave space for my Master’s thesis in the spring semester but, unfortunately, the courses with strict deadlines during the semester ended up taking effectively all the priority from them, leaving them in the dust for next year’s me to handle.

Recovering from the slump has been a slow process, but I feel that now that I’ve gotten the chance to rest up properly over the Christmas holiday with no worries about my studies and actually a spark of true inspiration for the topic of my Master’s thesis, I’m finally getting a grip on the projects that have been left on the backburner – a sudden urge to revise The Fate’s Way ended up dislodging something in me, and yesterday, on the 30th, I ended up giving a proper touch for three projects that had been waiting for it for months: Lyokostar 1, Greenfield and my FFM 2022 collection, which I had not gotten around to even beginning to work on. Being able to work on them without it being nothing but a grind has felt amazing and, in a way, liberating – I’ve finally gotten the better of my slump. While I hold little to no love towards the game project I have to finish for one of my remaining courses, I actually feel that I can tackle it properly, come spring semester.

The second half of 2022 also marked the sunsetting of one of my longest-standing projects: Exceptional Jedi, which, after long deliberation, I ended up discontinuing before I would run the quality all the way to the ground. Then again, it was not all doom and gloom – during 2022, I got into Persona 5 Royal and ended up beginning a massive longfic for it – Navigator’s Glove, which hit 365k words today, the 31st. It has been my one passion project through my slump, drawing in the creative energy that I had and giving it an unforced outlet. While at times it, too, faced the effects of my slump, it ended up persevering. Have I written it way too much over these last months? Absolutely. Has it been worth it? Absolutely as well; it’s been a joyride to write, and the sheer amount of words that I was able to produce when most of my creative projects were nothing but a chore continues to impress me. I am impressed enough by it that I decided to add it to my writing statistics next year especially since it has taken over EJ‘s spot of the daily writing project.

It’s been quite a year. It’s getting close to the first anniversary of me getting my first pair of glasses (a terrifying prospect, considering how recent it still feels), I’ve returned two projects from their hiatuses, I improved this website’s accessibility, I was a part of a big software project, I lost the group on DeviantArt I had been a contributor in for ages and which was one of my reasons to stay there mere days after becoming its founder because of hackers, I handled FFM despite of COVID and urgent coursework and I got into a fantastic game that has sparked two fanfiction project ideas (one of which is the aforementioned Navigator’s Glove) and helped me remain creatively productive during my slump even to the point of overproductiveness. Could it have been better? Definitely. Am I satisfied with it? Well, now that I’ve properly escaped the grasp of my slump, I am quite satisfied. After all, I did do coding work that I’m proud of and my projects have faced progress.

In my previous Currently on art update, I discussed the possibility of putting A Wandering Aura on an indefinite hiatus of its own. I have, however, decided not to do that just yet. While I am planning on focusing most of my efforts to my longer-standing projects in addition to my courses, I want to keep it on the backburner instead of the hiatus shelf for now in case inspiration strikes.

I’d say that’s all I have to say about this year. Now, let’s look at the Q4 2022 and 2022 total statistics.

Now that the statistics are done, it’s time to look at the todos I put up on my previous end-of-the-year post. How does it look now that the year is over and it’s time to see how well I did? The ones struck through are done, while underlined are in progress. Bolded words are comments.

  • Studying
  • Getting through that project course
  • Being organized about how I study through period 3
  • Getting the Prose-ject and Tribble Month collections done and released The Prose-ject collection was released but none of the TM ones were
  • Studying
  • Trying to get a summer job Didn’t get any
  • Being more organized about losing weight and getting into a better shape Yeah, this didn’t happen
  • Being more organized about life in general I think I have been, although not as much as I’d hoped
  • Studying
  • Editing Greenfield
  • Revising at least most of The Fate’s Way
  • If I get all of TFW revised, resume revising Exceptional Jedi This didn’t happen nor will it happen
  • Seeing if I can stomach reworking and translating Lyokostar 1 again at some point during the year
  • Trying not to get crushed by period 3 of the current studying year
  • Getting myself a topic for my Master’s thesis
  • Improving my system for backups I mean, it’s better now, but the NAS I made is underutilized and has too little pace
  • Working on my web programming project that went on a standstill when the dumpster fire started I think I might scrap it since the my project course work is far better for my portfolio
  • Learning more Japanese Didn’t happen since I had to drop Japanese
  • Studying
  • Learning how to live with glasses
  • Getting my online courses done and more games out
  • Doing something about my pile of speedpaint footage
  • Tackling my TBR pile
  • Watching stuff on my TBW list
  • Playing some games on my TBP list
  • Doing an ending episode to that dumb podcast thing I made when the pandemic first started (lol) I think I’m going to let that cringy garbage just be dropped…
  • Hoarding more data
  • Being more dutiful about doing chores
  • Studying
  • Finishing Jedova Wang’s reference
  • Improving this website’s accessibility

When I copypasted this list here, I was expecting it to look pretty bad, but I’m pleasantly surprised. There were things that were most certainly forgotten, but I did get a lot of these done. Now, as for what I should try to do next year (although I bet I’ll forget them by the end of Q2 like I did last year lol), I think these will do:

  • Releasing the 2022 editions of my world collections where needed
  • Studying
  • Being more organized about chores
  • Finishing the FFM 2022 collection
  • Making the Tribble Month collections
  • Studying
  • Actually finally starting to work out properly to get into better shape
  • Bringing variety to my diet
  • Doing something about my pile of speedpaint footage
  • Tackling my TBR pile
  • Watching stuff on my TBW list
  • Playing some games on my TBP list
  • Finishing the game courses from last summer
  • Finishing Jedova Wang’s reference
  • Hoarding more data
  • Finishing my Master’s degree
  • Getting a job
  • Learning Japanese
  • Improving my backup system to use my NAS better

Huh. The list is far shorter than I expected. Will I do better than this year? We’ll see a year from now! I hope I will; while there are pretty big things on the list, this list seems doable if I just make the time for it all a bit at a time.

Now that that’s done with, let’s see how things are going with my projects, as per my project widget:

  • The Fate’s Way: Chapter 76 is in writing I still need to redraw the regular Alyssa and also Alyssa’s friends and family and the other important people, like Matti, someday. I revised one chapter and more revisions should be coming soon.
  • Off-DA projects: Nothing notable here.
  • Greenfield: At the last moments of the year, I finally got a grip on this and started to work on this again. I’m currently working on editing chapter 4. Read more about the project here.
  • Lyokostar: The second part of story 7 is in translation and heavy reworking. This story is in need of massive reworking, so it’s going to take a long time to finish. References need to be done.
  • A Wandering Aura: I haven’t done anything for this in ages. I’m considered putting it on indefinite hiatus but decided against it since my slump is just ending now.
  • Navigator’s Glove: I finished chapter 50, so the new year will start with chapter 51.
  • GamingHabiticaPokémon GO and Pokémon Masters EX keep on going, although Pokémon Go only rarely nowadays. I’ve also played Persona 5 Royal and Persona 5 Strikers a lot.
  • Other stuff: I started working on my FFM 2022 collection and I read the Persona 5 Mementos Mission mangas since I got them as Christmas presents. Otherwise, I haven’t read much else than some random fanfics here and there. I still haven’t gotten started with IDW’s Transformers comics, either.
  • Personal life: I have been pretty low on energy and motivation, so coursework has gotten most of the limited energy I have available. I’ve finally really started overcoming my slump, though, as evidenced by my return to my projects that have been standing still for a long time. The next year will surely be better than the ending half-yer has been!

That’s all for this quarter and year. Happy new year and take care!
