FFM 2025 22: A Bland Essay

Challenge: Write “Challenge me!” in the comments and challenge other people with a document type they must use as well as “a topic that a document (of any type) in the story must cover”. Choose one or more of the challenges you got and write an epistolary story using them.

My challenge selections: An essay about time travel by MinneWinne and Translation footnotes. / Prophetic dreams. by gdeyke.

Ever since the invention of functioning time travel, the course of history and future has started to blur…

I yawned. Thanks to time travel, this essay, too, might go out of existence at any given moment. Yay. The fact that this moment could cease to exist made it difficult to care enough to put any effort into all this, no matter how much the scientists clamored about the multiverse theory and how it meant that our lives would never just pop out of existence, no matter who did what in the past. Still, I had a history course to pass, and so I continued reading.

…Some people, however, claim to have seen how things originally went while in sleep. These dreams we have come to call “prophetic dreams”2….

Yawn. Sounds like something out of a bland science fantasy story. I checked the footnote with hopes that it would be less boring.

2: In the original Neo-Earth version, these are called “spectat relicu” dreams, which roughly translates to “see remains” dreams. After a lot of debating with Neo-Earth experts, the Pyxus academia has decided that the translation should be “prophetic dreams”, as these dreams foretell our original past.

Talk about a ham-fisted translation. Someone in the translation team must have really been into the mystical. Bland science fantasy life, woohoo.

…Due to the multiverse theory-

A message popped up to my communicator. I opened it immediately. It was from my bestie.

Bestie: Ayy, this essay is more boring than those crackers I bought last week. Wanna hit the park and take turns reading it out loud in ridiculous voices?

I grinned.

Me: That’s the best thing I’ve heard ever since the semester started. Meet you there ASAP.

Bestie: See you soon, bestie!
