FFM 2021 3: Catastrophes

Challenge: The story must include three separate catastrophes and the story must have a happy ending.

Since three catastrophes were needed, I figured that writing a 369er would be most optimal format for this challenge. Enjoy!

You were supposed to be awake an hour ago. As you curse at your dead phone, you can already envision everyone except you graduating. Still, you decide to take a leap of faith and see if the teacher is feeling merciful.

It turns out the whole exam server had crashed minutes before everyone was supposed to be online. Heart pounding, you claim technical problems.

You graduate with everyone else.

You knew better than to walk under a flock of pigeons while wearing your best suit. Today, however, you were in too much of a hurry to avoid those darned birds.

You are certain that you won’t get the job when you arrive at the interview with a distinct white-and-gray stain on your left shoulder, unsure if that spot will ever be black again.

You get the job anyway.

You have overcome considerable catastrophes. Solar flares putting systems on the fritz is no big deal.

Nevertheless, aliens invading Earth is a catastrophe you know you cannot — will not — overcome.

Except that you do, somehow. The alien warships plummet into the ground. There are casualties — you are not one of them — but no invasion.

A month later, you find out that the solar flares saved Earth that fateful day.

  1. This person is the OPPOSITE of Murphy’s Law. I need some of their luck in my life. This was like watching someone fall in slow motion, but they recover at the last second three different times. I think it fit the challenge so well!!
