Escaping Thief

This is a repost of an old work of mine from late 2018 that has both artwork and a flash fiction, figured I might as well post it here for backup purposes. This was my entry to FaerieWarrior‘s contest where the theme was Faerie Warrior, and one of the requirements was that the fairy must have a weapon and use it. I decided to draw an entry instead of writing one, and this is what I’ve come up with: a young thief-class fairy warrior hiding his identity in order to steal stuff. No one said that the fairy had to be a good guy, after all! Or who knows, perhaps this dude is a good guy after all. I really am not sure since I’ve never fleshed this world, Ephia, out well enough to know what’s going on there.

A thief fairy is jumping off the bridge with a stolen scroll and a staff that's shooting at a pursuing guard fairy.

The land of Ephia was divided in two: The White Fairies and The Black Fairies. Among the highest of the capital, Alen, walked a young, gaunt boy. From the looks of it, he seemed to be a lowly Black Fairy, a servant of some relatively poor Fairy; his black clothes were dirty and shagged, he carried merely two small and worn health potions and it appeared that he never washed himself, only getting dirtier after each task he fulfilled for his Master. What everyone took note of was that he bore no wings: whether he had lost them at a terribly young age or not even gained them for some reason, no one knew. In fact, no one even knew his name, where he had come from or who his Master actually was. Therefore, everyone who called him “The Black Wingless”.

Then came the day when The Black Wingless visited The Museum of Ancient Secrets. At first, no one paid attention to him; he had frequented the museum as a visitor often, admiring works of Fairies long gone. When he disappeared, no one noticed either; he never spoke to anyone unless he had to, and he never did. However, this time he infiltrated the Room of Magic and stole both The Scroll of The Lost and The Staff of A Blue Queen, a magical artifact from a fabled time of Fairies of other colors than White and Black. They had not existed for ages, and they were speculated to be a myth to cover up the attempts to create other colors of magic.

Upon detecting the theft, The Security sent out guards to catch the boy and recover the artifacts before it would be too late. As they stopped responding to calls, The Head of Security sent out their ace, Azezitu, a Fairy who had traversed the line between White and Black and become a Black-White Fairy. While she was powerful beyond understanding, the traversal had cost her her independent mind, binding her to the will of whoever held The Gem of Unison. This Fairy-turned-mindless-drone chased The Black Wingless to the top floor of The Museum, directing him to a bridge blocked by a Security patrol group. Seeing that he was cornered high above the ground, unable to defeat Azezitu and the patrol group in direct combat while being so badly outnumbered, he made his choice.

He jumped over the railing and spread his wings. The Blue Gem on top of The Staff glowed as he launched A Blue Thorn straight to Azezitu mid-air. Both the patrol group and Azezitu gasped as they saw both the wings and The Blue Thorn. Not only the boy had been able to utilize The Staff to its full power but his wings also were not black or white.

After the boy had escaped successfully and disappeared, the patrol group reported Azezitu having recovered a bit of her independence during the shock of seeing the wings only to succumb to her drone state soon after being critically injured by The Blue Thorn. The Medical reported that the Fairy would recover despite of getting relatively fatal injuries and would be back on her duties soon.

It did not take long before the news broke out. Aghast, everyone talked about the boy, him having hidden his wings from them all and what he had done at The Museum.

One thing was repeated in conversations with horror:

The Black Wingless was a Colorful.
