FFM 2023 27: Weddon’t

No prompts used.

Challenge: Collaborate with one or more FFMers. In the story, everything that can go wrong, goes wrong. You must include a character who either responds optimistically to all the disasters or one who was despondent from the start. Optionally, if you don’t want to or can’t do a collab, write an addition to a previous flashfic piece by anyone else from any year where everything starts to go wrong after the original ending.

I collaborated with WizardandGalaxy, who came up with the title and wrote the first section and in part the last section. I handled the second section and a part of the last section. And in case you’re wondering if the format is 369er, it is.

Here is WizardandGalaxy’s post of the story, please go check it out too!

Mary carried her brother’s wedding cake across the lawn, eyes glued to the wiggling grooms on top.  Around her, the furniture sported golden ribbons, just as she’d planned.  A perfect venue for her perfect brother, complete with a perfect—

A chunk of hail the size of a golf ball slammed through all four layers.

Mary looked up.  A smaller piece smacked her nose.

…Well!  What were a few adjustments?

Joshua was murmuring something and rubbing at his eyes. The more he glanced at the flowers, the worse Mary’s bad feeling became. It was one thing that she had had to substitute the Camellias with Dahlias but…

…Uh, surely the florist would not have given her unfitting flowers when she had said that some guests were allergic to pollen, right?

…Well then, time to learn more about pollen allergies!

“Speak now or forever hold your peace…”

“I object!”

Uh-oh. Mary saw her brother pale and look at her, eyes wide.

The objector started ranting, marching up to the couple, and it was then that Mary recognized him.  Derek Hartford, her brother’s craziest ex, decidedly on the do not invite list.  He started shaking her brother by the shoulders.

…Well.  At least now she knew to pay closer attention.
